New Poll: Schilling Beating Hare 41-38%

Rep. Phil Hare Gets a Cold Shoulder from Independent Voters

Hare Still Can’t Break 39% in Public Polling

Today an independent poll was released by We Ask America showing Bobby Schilling defeating Phil Hare less than 8 weeks before election day.

We Ask America Total GOP Dem Independent
Bobby Schilling (R) 41.15% 79.66% 8.75% 44.41%
Phil Hare (D) 38.41% 9.60% 73.09% 22.63%
Roger Davis (G) 3.85% 1.13% 2.84% 7.82%
Uncertain 16.60% 9.60% 15.32% 25.14%

According to We Ask America (the producers of this latest survey),

“[Rep. Phil Hare] has run into a bit of trouble as of late. A rather unfortunate quote regarding the U.S. Constitution started the ball rolling downhill for Hare… To complicate matters for Hare, the district has a Green Party candidate, Roger Davis.”

Hare’s weak re-elect numbers closely reflect a November 2009 poll in which showed Hare unable to garner 39% support for his re-election. Today’s We Ask America survey shows Hare dropping to only 23% support from Independents compared to Bobby Schilling’s 44% support. Momentum is on Bobby Schilling’s side and Hare’s poor performance among Independents proves that voters are ready for someone to focus on changing the direction of our economy, lowering spending, and creating good-paying jobs.

In early August of 2010 Public Opinion Strategies released a survey of IL-17 showing a statistical tie. ”Phil Hare is among the most vulnerable incumbents in the country,” said pollster, Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies. ”With an underwhelming image, an upside down re-elect, and a stunningly low ballot score, it is difficult to see a path to victory for the incumbent Congressman. Conversely, Republican Bobby Schilling has built a grassroots campaign that is continuing to gain momentum. As a result, Schilling is well positioned to defeat Hare this November.”

Phil Hare = A Lot More Gov’t Spending

As Bobby Schilling was in the Quad Cities yesterday calling for an end to government takeovers, massive spending, crushing deficits, high taxes, and bailouts, the Hare campaign continued its crusade against the private market and the private sector of the economy.

Hare spokesman Tim Schlittner was quoted in the Quad-City Times today. The Hare campaign’s only response to the problems of government spending and government takeovers was that, “The government does not control health care. The health care reform bill we passed didn’t even include a public option.” It is clear that Phil Hare wants more control and that he wants a public option that would cost even more to the taxpayers. Phil Hare believes that more government spending will fix our economy because he thinks government can solve our problems better than private individuals and free private enterprise.

Phil Hare has voted with Nancy Pelosi on almost every vote he has ever taken in Congress, a 98.8% rating with Pelosi. Plain and simple, Phil Hare has always been, and always will be, an advocate for big liberal interests, out-of-control spending, reckless deficits, and failed economic policies.

Can someone share this chart from the Joint Economic Committee with Phil Hare if he ever decides to have another town hall meeting? Even Hare should know that without the public option, the heavy hand of government is all over our health care system. The JEC chart below shows just some of the growth of taxes, bureaucracy, and new government programs that Hare voted for.

(... And Phil Hare wanted to add a public option to this maze?)

Americans and the people of the 17th district are facing some serious economic issues and these disagreements on economic policy highlight, yet again, the need for several debates in the 17th district.

Voters are excited by the alternative Bobby offers. People are resonating with Bobby’s proposals for cutting wasteful spending, growing jobs with Kennedy and Reagan style tax cuts, and his pledge to fight for the middle class.

Unlike Hare, Bobby knows we can’t continue down this failed course that Nancy Pelosi has led us — we can’t afford to gamble our future with Phil Hare. As you know, we are at a crossroads and we need your help.

Please do what you can today to help Bobby take back our government so we can remove Hare and get people back to work by cutting spending, lowering taxes, and rolling government back from crowding out the private sector. Contribute to Bobby’s MoneyBomb today to make a difference and send the message that you want real change. Help us remove Hare today.

Why Is Phil Hare Ducking Debates?

“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”  –  Abraham Lincoln

Phil Hare’s decision to duck debates is a stunning admission that the public doesn’t have a right to ask questions and that incumbent politicans don’t have to answer to their constituents.

With all of the important issues facing our country, Bobby Schilling called on Hare to commit to four debates across the district last week. The Hare campaign claims they haven’t seen the debate requests. However, this request letter has been sent directly to the Hare campaign and the media over a week ago.

Hare refuses to answer to his constituents even though just last week the US Bureau of Labor Statistics showed Illinois losing 20,020 jobs from June to July, making the state one of the biggest job losers in the entire country.

These debates would give Hare a chance to defend his votes for out-of-control spending, crushing deficits, government-run healthcare, and his 98.8% support of Speaker Pelosi’s liberal agenda.

Maybe the reason Hare is ducking debates is the same reason he refuses to release his poll numbers.  Hare knows that the voters are tired of politics as usual, his avid support for the Obama-Pelosi liberal agenda, and they want someone new who will focus on improving the economy and restoring the public trust.

Yesterday the Watermark Women agreed to host a political debate on September 2nd and Bobby has already agreed to participate. However, the Quad Cities Online is reporting that Phil Hare is missing in action, again. They wrote:

“The following candidates have not indicated yet whether or not they plan to attend the event: Larry Weber, Democratic candidate for Mercer County treasurer; Phil Hare, Democratic candidate for 17th District Congressional seat; and Pat Verschoore, Democratic candidate for 72nd District state representative. In addition, none of the candidates for Mercer County Board have indicated yet whether they plan to attend.”

Public political debates have always been an important element of American democracy during election season. Voters deserve to have a representative that is honest, forthright, and transparent in their dealings. You have to ask  yourself, “why is Phil Hare ducking the debates?”

On Monday Jim Geraghty at National Review Online placed IL-17 on his list among the top 42 Republican takeover chances in November. Bobby Schilling is the outsider candidate with business experience who is gaining momentum against incumbent Phil Hare in IL-17. This race is key for everyone who wants real change from the status quo, and a chance to retire Nancy Pelosi’s liberal agenda in Washington.

Geraghty’s analysis of Illinois races show Bobby Schilling (IL-17) and Adam Kinzinger (IL-11) have the best chance at winning this fall against their opponents.

The reason that IL-17 has become more competitive is clear. Bobby has been straight forward with the voters of the 17th district with ideas focused on the economy: improving conditions for job creation, getting better control of federal spending, making Washington more accountable, and lowering taxes. Earlier this year Bobby met with voters on a 34-city “Bob’s for Jobs Tour.” This summer Bobby has committed to holding another series of “Solutions for the 17th Town Hall Meetings” across the district.

The Aledo Times Record quoted Schilling recently saying:

“I want to share my vision with the people of the 17th District.  At the same time, I want to hear their concerns. The current representative of this district refuses to hold town halls because he doesn’t want to explain his record to the people he represents. I have promised that as a Congressman I will provide constituent service that is second to none. I believe that includes holding regular town halls across the district. A true statesman listens to the people he represents, and I intend to do just that.”

While statewide unemployment remains stagnant at over 10% Phil Hare continues to stand by the Obama-Pelosi liberal agenda and he ignores the Schilling campaign’s request to participate in public debates. Instead, Phil Hare has decided to use taxpayer funds to send out constituent “mailers” and holding “tele-town halls” that screen questions from concerned citizens to promote his re-election campaign.

Update from D.C. Trip

I just landed in New York City to begin a short visit out east to meet some natives of the Quad Cities and other parts of Illinois who have invited me out to offer their support and encouragement.  I’m going down to Washington DC Tuesday–to meet with more Quad Cities and Illinois people, the Illinois Republican Delegation, and a host of people in our nation’s capitol who have been so encouraging in our race thus far.

When our group got together–at a nice hamburger joint near Grand Central Station– the small talk was exactly what it would be if we were back in Illinois–excitement about the Blackhawks, frustration with the Cubs, as well as some speculation about the upcoming football season in the Western Big Six.  In one sense it was very gratifying: here are a group of people from our communities who are quite successful in very competitive fields who still feel a close attachment to our state. It just goes to show that we do have a great community that evokes a sense of pride–even amongst those who live hundreds of miles away.

What a shame that they don’t still live in our state. These people left their towns for greater opportunities than we could offer them, and it is our loss. We can’t continue to export the majority of our most talented young people if we want our economy to keep pace and create jobs. Every Congressional district but the 17th increased in population in the last 10 years–actually out of 435 districts, the 17th ranks 25th for exodus.

Communities all over the United States want to be the next Silicon Valley or Biotech Corridor for whatever the next new thing is–whether it be alternative energy or transport or something we’ve not yet thought about. I’d like for our area to be the next hot area for great jobs too–but I know enough to say that I cannot predict what that will be and that merely by throwing a few subsidies around we’re not going to create it. But if we can work to keep our best students from leaving the state–and make our district a place where smart, ambitious young men and women want to live–we’re going to have an economy that creates jobs for everyone.

Hare spent $30,000 on Polling in first quarter

EAST MOLINE, IL–Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the IL-17 District, challenged Rep. Phil Hare to release the results of two polls, which his campaign paid for in the first quarter of this year, within the next 48 hours. According to the FEC, Friends of Phil Hare paid $30,000 on two polls conducted on February 12 and 19 of 2010. Schilling said that Rep. Hare should release the results of the poll, especially in regard to healthcare, so that the citizens of the 17th can know whether or not he voted in line with the will of his constituents.

“Rep. Hare spent $30,000 of his constituents’ donations on two polls in early February, and I challenge him to release the results, good or bad, within the next 48 hours,” said Schilling. “I am confident the poll numbers will show that Hare is politically weak due to his support of the Obama, Pelosi liberal agenda that is out-of-step with the hardworking taxpayers of Illinois.”

Schilling, a native of Rock Island, graduated from Alleman High School and attended Black Hawk College. Schilling, a local business owner and father of ten children, is the Republican candidate for the 17th Congressional District in Illinois. Bobby is running on a platform of bringing jobs and real representation back to the 17th District. Earlier this year, Schilling conducted a 34-city “Bob’s for Jobs” tour, where he met with voters and employers all across the 17th District.

Raised over $72,000 from individual donors in 1st quarter

EAST MOLINE, IL–Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the IL-17 Congressional District, is proud to announce that his campaign has over $109,000 in his campaign account. Schilling raised a little over $72,000 in the first quarter, with only $350 coming from political action committees. Rep. Phil Hare, Schilling’s November opponent, managed to only raise a little over $14,000 from individual donors. Terry Schilling, campaign manager for the Schilling campaign, said that there is a clear difference between the two candidates and their campaigns.

“The fact that we managed to out-raise our incumbent opponent in individual donations, while in a district designed for Democrats, says something about our campaign supporters,” said Terry Schilling. “A lot of people have sacrificed and put in hundreds of hours to help us. Our donations come from Democrats, Republicans and Independents. We are going to continue to bring our independent message to the voters of the 17th District. People are sick of the spending, tax increases and status-quo that is Washington D.C.”

The Schilling campaign also set a record for a Republican challenger in the 17th District. No other challenger has had over $50,000 at this point, for the past decade.

Schilling also pointed out that Hare raised over 87 per cent of his donations from special interest political action committees. Schilling said that with numbers like that it is clear who truly represents the citizens of the 17th District and who represents the special interest lobbying groups.

According to the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, real personal incomes during Obama’s presidency have dropped 3.2% while in office. This continues to show that the bailouts, the stimuluses, and the policies being put forth out of Washington are simply not working.

“This is hardly surprising,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, an economist and former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. “Under President Obama, only federal spending is going up; jobs, business startups, and incomes are all down. It is proof that the government can’t spend its way to prosperity.”

Its impossible to tax and spend oneself into prosperity. It has never happened in the past, and it won’t happen in the future.

“Where’s Phil?”

EAST MOLINE, IL– Bobby Schilling, the Republican Candidate for the Illinois 17th Congressional District, declared the Democratic Party is attempting to intimidate companies who fail to yield to the party’s agenda. Democratic leadership recently demanded that the CEOs of John Deere and Caterpillar appear before Congress and surrender company documents, a move that has apparently met with the tacit approval of the district’s current Congressman, Phil Hare.

“Our Congressman cannot even muster the smallest protest to this threat to our community’s jobs and livelihoods while he marches in lockstep with Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman, and the liberal California Congressmen who run our government,” Schilling said.

On March 26th, Rep. Henry Waxman, the Chair of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, issued letters to the CEOs of Caterpillar and John Deere, the two largest employers in the 17th district, demanding that they turn over any and all documents and emails related to their recent earnings statements and that they testify before Congress to explain their actions. Both companies, along with a host of other Fortune 500 companies, announced that the latest healthcare legislation will lower future profits by hundreds of millions of dollars, which will hurt their employees as well as the economies they are located in. The companies explained in their announcements that they had to estimate the legislation’s impact on profits soon after the legislation passed in order to comply with SEC regulations.

Schilling said that these “companies employ thousands of workers in our district, and the recently passed healthcare legislation will cost each company hundreds of millions of dollars. More importantly, the legislation takes away any incentive these companies have to provide retiree drug benefits. By merely reporting these facts, as they are required to do by the Financial Accounting and Standards Board, Chairman Waxman has decided to rake them over the coals and bring their CEOs to DC for what will amount to little more than a show trial.

“Given Hare’s silence on the subject, it seems that when he has to choose between loyalty to his party’s leadership and jobs in his district, he sticks with his party bosses. My loyalty will always be to the jobs of the men and women who live and work in the 17th district of Illinois.”

EAST MOLINE, IL–Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the IL-17 District, held a “Kill the Bill” money-bomb fundraising drive that pulled in $25,215.67. The fundraising drive was announced about two weeks ago and ended on Sunday, March 21, at midnight. Schilling said that the success of this fundraising drive shows that voters are ready for a new direction in Illinois politics.

“I was only expecting to raise around $5,000 for this money-bomb,” said Schilling. “I am humbled and honored that grassroot supporters came together and helped us crush our original goal. It shows that supporters are fired-up and ready to go.”

Mike Moehlenhof, a grassroot supporter of Mr. Schilling, was responsible for organizing and advertising for the money-bomb drive. Mr. Moehlenhof said that financial support started coming in as soon as they began advertising for the drive.

“People were very eager to donate to Bobby’s campaign,” said Moehlenhof. “In fact we reached the original goal of $10,000, six days early. Then, when we announced that we had to adjust the goal, the flood gates opened. I was very happy when we found out the total amount raised was over $25,000. I can’t wait to do another one closer to the election.”

Mr. Moehlenhof said that the fundraising drive attracted a lot of new donors and that supporters were extremely engaged for this event.

Moehlenhof continued, “People really connect with Bobby’s fresh face and uplifting message. They are sick of the tax and spend, regulate more, status-quo politicians in Washington. His campaign has a message that Republicans, Independents and even a lot of Democrats can embrace.”
