Indian captain Rohit Sharma once again showed his strength in the third ODI against New Zealand at Indore on Tuesday. Rohit, who previously scored a century in T20 on the same ground, again scored an ODI century on the same ground. Rohit equaled former Australian captain Ricky Ponting’s record by achieving this feat in the third ODI against New Zealand.
This is Rohit’s 30th century in ODIs and he is tied with Ricky Ponting for the third most centuries in the 50 over format. By the time he retired from cricket, Ponting had scored 30 centuries in the ODI format. And if Rohit scores another ODI century, then Rohit will take Ricky Ponting’s place completely. Ponting will be sent to the fourth position.
Former Indian player Sachin Tendulkar tops the list of players who have scored the most centuries in ODIs with 49 centuries. After Sachin is Virat Kohli. After these two, Rohit Sharma and Ponting are tied at the 3rd position.
This is Rohit’s first ODI century in three years. Before this, Rohit scored a century against Australia on January 19, 2020. With this century, Rohit surpassed former Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya’s record. While Jayasuriya scored 28 ODI centuries as an opener, Rohit Sharma registered his 29th ODI century with that century.
And in the match against New Zealand on Tuesday, Rohit lost his wicket immediately after scoring his 30th century in ODIs. Rohit scored 101 runs off 85 balls with 9 fours and 6 sixes.
