Team India won another victory in the Hockey World Cup being held at Bhubaneswar. In the final group match against Wales at the Kalinga Stadium, they won 4-2. Thus, it was one step away from the quarter finals. At the beginning of the match, the teams of India and Wales faced each other fiercely. As a result, not a single goal was recorded in the first quarter. But in the seventh minute of the second quarter (in the 22nd minute), captain Harmanpreet Singh’s drag flick was rebounded by Shamsher Singh and turned into a goal. After that, Akashdeep scored the second goal in the 32nd minute to take India into the lead. However, in the 42nd and 44th minute, Wales shocked the Indian team by scoring two consecutive goals. Scores of both teams were drawn. But in the first minute of the last quarter, Akashdeep scored again (46th minute) and India took a 3-2 lead. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a penalty corner in the last seconds of the match and Team India won by 4-2.
India won 2-0 in the match against Spain last week as part of the World Cup. After that the match against England ended in a draw. The recent win over Wales saw them finish second in the group. England (2 wins out of 3 matches, one draw) topped the table and went directly to the quarters. Second placed India (2 wins in 3 matches, 1 draw) will have to win a cross-over match (Sunday) against New Zealand, which is placed third in Pool-C. Only then will it reach the quarter finals.
Goal! Harmanpreet uses the penalty corner to his advantage and takes India to a comfortable score.
