The BCCI has released an official statement that Mohammad Shami has been included in the team to replace Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the T20 World Cup due to injury. Earlier, Shami was included in the list of standby players for the T20 World Cup. But Bumrah missed the mega event due to injury and Shami got a place in the main squad. Along with him, Mohammad Siraj and Shardul Thakur were selected as backup players for the team. Soon these two will also go to Australia. Earlier, Deepak Chahar was also in the race to replace Bumrah. But Deepak was injured before the start of the ODI series against South Africa. Due to this he also missed the Aussie flight. Shami has already reached Australia. The BCCI also said that Shami will join the team in Brisbane before the start of the practice matches.
Experience is the priority.
Meanwhile, India’s fast bowling line-up now includes Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh. Earlier, many former cricketers, former BCCI selectors including Dilip Vengsarkar, Krishnamachari Srikanth suggested to the board to include Shami in the team. Playing for IPL 2022 champions Gujarat Titans, Shami took 20 wickets in 16 matches at a strike rate of 18.30. The main reason for choosing Mohammed Shami is his experience in Australia. Shami played 8 Tests and 14 ODIs in Australia. But he played only one T20 match there. Shami’s record in international T20 matches is not much. He took 18 wickets in 17 T20 matches. The economy rate is 9.54 runs per over.
