There has been a debate on women’s reservation for years. The Women’s Reservation Bill did not become law in Parliament. In this context, former Union Minister and NCP leader Sharad Pawar made sensational comments on women’s reservation. He said that North India is not positive about providing reservation for women and they are not able to digest it. Sharad Pawar made these key comments in an interview with his daughter Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule at a program organized by the Pune Doctors Association. The Women’s Reservation Bill, which provides for 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and all state legislatures, is yet to be passed. When Sharad Pawar was asked by the media that the nation is not yet mentally ready in this matter, he replied that he has been talking about this issue in Parliament since he was a member of the Congress.

It is clear that North India is not willing in this regard. He said once when he was giving a speech on this issue, majority of the MPs from his party got up and left. He said that it became clear to him that especially those from his party are not able to digest this. Sharad Pawar said that all the parties should keep trying to get this bill passed.

He said that when he was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, he introduced reservation for women in local bodies like Zilla Parishit and Panchayat Samiti, and after initially opposing it, the people accepted it. Sharad Power’s comments on the issue of women’s reservation have sparked an interesting debate in political circles.
