New Poll: Schilling Beating Hare 41-38%

Rep. Phil Hare Gets a Cold Shoulder from Independent Voters

Hare Still Can’t Break 39% in Public Polling

Today an independent poll was released by We Ask America showing Bobby Schilling defeating Phil Hare less than 8 weeks before election day.

We Ask America Total GOP Dem Independent
Bobby Schilling (R) 41.15% 79.66% 8.75% 44.41%
Phil Hare (D) 38.41% 9.60% 73.09% 22.63%
Roger Davis (G) 3.85% 1.13% 2.84% 7.82%
Uncertain 16.60% 9.60% 15.32% 25.14%

According to We Ask America (the producers of this latest survey),

“[Rep. Phil Hare] has run into a bit of trouble as of late. A rather unfortunate quote regarding the U.S. Constitution started the ball rolling downhill for Hare… To complicate matters for Hare, the district has a Green Party candidate, Roger Davis.”

Hare’s weak re-elect numbers closely reflect a November 2009 poll in which showed Hare unable to garner 39% support for his re-election. Today’s We Ask America survey shows Hare dropping to only 23% support from Independents compared to Bobby Schilling’s 44% support. Momentum is on Bobby Schilling’s side and Hare’s poor performance among Independents proves that voters are ready for someone to focus on changing the direction of our economy, lowering spending, and creating good-paying jobs.

In early August of 2010 Public Opinion Strategies released a survey of IL-17 showing a statistical tie. ”Phil Hare is among the most vulnerable incumbents in the country,” said pollster, Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies. ”With an underwhelming image, an upside down re-elect, and a stunningly low ballot score, it is difficult to see a path to victory for the incumbent Congressman. Conversely, Republican Bobby Schilling has built a grassroots campaign that is continuing to gain momentum. As a result, Schilling is well positioned to defeat Hare this November.”

It can’t be stressed enough how we need new blood to focus on the economic crisis that is threatening our state and country. The US economy lost 283,000 jobs over what this administration has dubbed the “Recovery Summer.” According to the latest US Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers unemployment rose from 9.5% to 9.6%. There were 1.1 million discouraged workers (people not looking for work because they don’t believe any jobs even exist for them) in August, an increase of 352,000 from a year earlier. Remarkably, underemployment has risen to 16.7%.

On top of that economists are speculating that the housing market is crashing. According to Business Insider, “The index of unclosed contracts to buy a home increased from 75.5 to 79.4. In the previous two months demand had fallen a record 30% and then 2.8% more. The July 2010 reading is 19% lower than July 2009.”

Facts are stubborn things and the fact remains that our political leaders in Washington remain committed to a set of policies that have failed our economy, and severely hindered Illinois’ ability to create good paying jobs and growth the middle class. Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. If we continue down this failed path with Phil Hare we can only expect to see his partisan loyalties continue to trump the best interests of IL-17. It is becoming increasingly clear that what we need is fresh, new leadership. Bobby Schilling has the business experience, determination, and will to make Washington accountable to the people again.

This weekend Bobby Schilling put out a press release with a reaction to the depressing economic news reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Under Phil Hare’s failed leadership Illinois has lost 171,100 jobs since the stimulus passed in February of 2009. Here is the Schilling release:

When the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act passed in February 2009, the Obama Administration projected that the bill would create 3.7 million jobs by December 2010, including 148,000 new jobs in Illinois. This has not happened. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 2.6 millions jobs have been lost since the $787 billion stimulus package’s passage, a net difference of 6.3 million jobs. Illinois has lost 171,100 jobs since the bill’s passage, a net difference of 319,100 jobs.

Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th District, believes these numbers are indicative of the failure of the stimulus bill.

“It’s been 18 months since the passage of the stimulus, and we’re still waiting for these new jobs,” Schilling said. “Actually, we’ve lost more jobs. We spent $787 billion our country couldn’t afford on a bill that made a bad economic situation worse. People are starting to realize that raising taxes and spending excessively is not the way out of a recession. It’s time for representation that will do what it takes to bring jobs to the 17th District. I will fight for low taxes, for fiscal responsibility, and for the needs of the people of this district.”

These figures are clear proof that we need a change and that the way forward is with new leadership. We must replace Phil Hare in November to refocus on jobs and the economy in 2011. Thankfully, Bobby Schilling is focused on the economy and job creation for the middle class. Schilling’s business background and prescription of pro-growth, low tax policies is what we need in Congress to fix the unemployment crisis here in Illinois.

On Monday Jim Geraghty at National Review Online placed IL-17 on his list among the top 42 Republican takeover chances in November. Bobby Schilling is the outsider candidate with business experience who is gaining momentum against incumbent Phil Hare in IL-17. This race is key for everyone who wants real change from the status quo, and a chance to retire Nancy Pelosi’s liberal agenda in Washington.

Geraghty’s analysis of Illinois races show Bobby Schilling (IL-17) and Adam Kinzinger (IL-11) have the best chance at winning this fall against their opponents.

The reason that IL-17 has become more competitive is clear. Bobby has been straight forward with the voters of the 17th district with ideas focused on the economy: improving conditions for job creation, getting better control of federal spending, making Washington more accountable, and lowering taxes. Earlier this year Bobby met with voters on a 34-city “Bob’s for Jobs Tour.” This summer Bobby has committed to holding another series of “Solutions for the 17th Town Hall Meetings” across the district.

The Aledo Times Record quoted Schilling recently saying:

“I want to share my vision with the people of the 17th District.  At the same time, I want to hear their concerns. The current representative of this district refuses to hold town halls because he doesn’t want to explain his record to the people he represents. I have promised that as a Congressman I will provide constituent service that is second to none. I believe that includes holding regular town halls across the district. A true statesman listens to the people he represents, and I intend to do just that.”

While statewide unemployment remains stagnant at over 10% Phil Hare continues to stand by the Obama-Pelosi liberal agenda and he ignores the Schilling campaign’s request to participate in public debates. Instead, Phil Hare has decided to use taxpayer funds to send out constituent “mailers” and holding “tele-town halls” that screen questions from concerned citizens to promote his re-election campaign.

According to the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis, real personal incomes during Obama’s presidency have dropped 3.2% while in office. This continues to show that the bailouts, the stimuluses, and the policies being put forth out of Washington are simply not working.

“This is hardly surprising,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, an economist and former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. “Under President Obama, only federal spending is going up; jobs, business startups, and incomes are all down. It is proof that the government can’t spend its way to prosperity.”

Its impossible to tax and spend oneself into prosperity. It has never happened in the past, and it won’t happen in the future.

Jobs and economy among other issues

DECATUR, IL–Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th Congressional District, held a town hall in Decatur today, where he spoke about jobs, the economy and health care reform. The town hall attracted voters from all across the political spectrum. About thirty-five people showed up to listen and ask questions.

“I am not running for Congress to be the opposition, I am running to be the alternative,” Schilling said. “We cannot be the party of no. Both parties need to work together because while they are playing games in Washington, people are paying more for their insurance premiums and more people are losing their coverage.”

Schilling continued, “I believe that there are many free market solutions to this health care crisis that we need to try before we completely overhaul the entire system. Tort reform, national competition, and medicare and medicaid reform are important steps to correctly and effectively reforming health care.”

Jobs, the economy and the national debt were among other topics that were discussed.

“Just today the Treasury Department announced that the February deficit was over $220 billion,” said Schilling. ”This is an all time record for the month of February. The politicians in Washington are out of control. We have to reign in the outrageous spending.”

Schilling, a native of Rock Island. graduated from Alleman High School and attended Black Hawk College. Schilling, a local business owner and father of ten children, is the Republican candidate for the 17th Congressional District in Illinois. Bobby is running on a platform of bring jobs and real representation back to the 17th District. Earlier this year, Schilling conducted a 34-city “Bob’s for Jobs” tour, where he met with voters and employers all across the 17th District.

Jobless Claims Go Up in January

According to a report published by the AP this morning, the rise in jobless claims for January thus far rose again according to surveys sent out from the Department of Labor to employers. This is discouraging to see since so many workers are stuggling, and the unemployment problem is affecting the economic recovery.

The officials numbers from January won’t come out until February 5th, but there is no that the Obama administration nor Congress are taking any action to curb unemployment in the country. Without jobs, the economy will continue to struggle, and hurt working and middle class families in the district.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Schilling: Hare Deserves Anything but an A-

Says Hare has failed on many fronts

EAST MOLINE, IL– Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th Congressional District, criticized Rep. Phil Hare for grading himself an A- in a recent interview. Schilling said Hare must be living on some other planet if he thinks that he is doing that well.

“Congressman Hare is completely wrong to grade himself that high,” said Schilling. “It makes me wonder, if Hare is going to grade himself an A- during the biggest recession since the 1970’s, then how well would he grade himself during a good economy?”

The facts and statistics are not in Hare’s favor. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average unemployment rate for the 23 counties in the 17th District is 10.2%. The $787 billion stimulus package, that Hare supported, has not been very successful. According to the Recovery.gov website, the federal government has spent $264,111.87 per job ’saved or created’ in Illinois.

“This sort of thinking helps explain why Social Security recipients get no cost of living increases, while members of Congress are voting themselves pay raises,” Schilling said.

“Rep. Hare has obviously lost touch with the daily lives of his constituents. The unemployment rate has doubled in almost every county in the district, since Hare has taken office. Hare may be grading himself on effort, but we need a congressman who can get results. Hare has failed our district by acting as a ‘rank and file’ congressman. We need someone who will lead us, not follow party leaders like Nancy Pelosi.” Schilling said.

Bobby Schilling, a native of Rock Island, has served as a local union steward and also has 13 years of union experience. Schilling, a local business owner and father of nine children, is running on a platform of bringing jobs and real representation back to the 17th district. Earlier this year, Schilling conducted a 34-city “Bob’s for Jobs” tour, where he met with voters and employers all across the district. Schilling is the only Republican candidate for the Illinois 17th District that will be on the ballot in the February primary election.
